Project Wildlife Haven
With over 8 Acres of property and a vast range of ecosystems, you’d think my yard would be absolutely stellar. In many ways it is, after all the 100+ egret that come into the quarry every night there has to be some sort of value. but in terms of migrating songbirds my property is very lack luster.
Discovering the problem………
Over the last year I’ve spent much less time on birds and animals and turned towards plant life. Much to my surprise without plants the birds and animals we love wouldn’t exist. For birds and some mammals plants provide fruit and nuts to eat and supply oxygen needed to live, but most importantly the relationship held between insects and plants are the real prize. Native plants host insects which is the main food source for the song birds I’m after, unfortunately for me my property was completely taken over by invasive plant species ( Amur Honeysuckle, Bamboo, Winter Creeper, Multiflora Rose, Tree of Heaven) to name a few. As you’d expect these plants host little to no insects which Songbirds need to survive.
The Fix….
So I dished out a plan to convert my property from a invasive wasteland back into a native wildlife sanctuary doing all I need to remove every invasive plant trying to take over. as I take on this challenge I will be documenting every single part of this journey on my YouTube.
